Tech-savvy and Eco-friendly

computer trashFriday, August 17th 9am – Saturday, August 18th 4pm. The City of Albuquerque is hosting a Tech Recycling event at the Balloon Fiesta Park.

Electronic recycler Natural Evolution will accept most broken electronics. Check out the City of Albuquerque website for more details about what can and can’t be donated. The cost is free and residents can bring their unwanted items on Saturday.  Friday is for businesses to donate. Help keep Albuquerque clean with responsible disposing of your electronic trash.

How about those cell phones, cameras, and mp3 players? They use a lot of energy to keep charged. Here are a couple of greener alternatives.

Solio – This universal charger will charge many different items using various tips. It will charge your equipment at the same rate as a conventional charger. Just expose the Solio unit to sunlight for 8-10 hours and you will be able to charge your cell phone at least two times.

GaiamPortable Solar electronic charger. Just open it, expose it to sunlight, and power up your technology.

RewareJuice Bags. These bags, made from recycled 2-liter bottles, will easily charge any item that could be charged in your car charger.

batteriesDump the batteries! Or, at least switch to rechargables.

There are several options:

  • Standard battery charger. Will charge most standard sizes of batteries. Great for cameras, handheld games, and mp3′s.
  • Solar battery charger. Will charge AAA, AA, C, and D as well as 9-volt. Will work on AC power as well as a solar panel.

Switch from Cordless phones to Corded phones.

  • Uses less energy.
  • Won’t interfere with other devices.
  • Won’t lose service during a power outage.
  • Keeps more electronic trash out of landfills (no batteries to worry about).

Ashley, I can only imagine what kind of technology will be seen at the Tech Recycling event in Albuquerque. These were fantastic ideas that you pointed out in your post.

Stephanie – It will be interesting to see what people bring out. I like the Solio one as I hadn’t heard of it before last week. I having been using rechargeable batteries for over 25 years now! Why hasn’t this caught on more?

Ashley, Good to see ABQ sponsors these types of events. It seems like all too often some folks don’t realize what they’re doing by improper disposing of hazardous items. It should be quite a haul!

Ashley, We turned to rechargable batteries a while ago and we love them. It is nice to see Albuquerque’s effort to help our environment.

Lynda – Thanks for linking my post on your blog! I hope there is a good turnout. I see all to often TV’s and old computers just being added to the normal trash so hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call.

Ashley – this is one of the coolest posts I’ve ever seen on moving towards being more “Eco Friendly” – you are such a great resource for the people and neighborhoods in ABQ – thanks for sharing how Clearwater’s working to be more “Green” via our “Blue Waves”

Cyndee – Albuquerque is making great strides on the green movement. I loved reading about the “Blue Waves” program in Clearwater Florida. We all have to work together to keep our planet healthy.

This is certainly a complete list Ashley, and although your Tech Fair is over, it still has very timely information.
