Albuquerque has some great neighborhoods that are very walkable, including UNM, Nob Hill, Old Town, and Downtown. You can get your own Neighborhood Walking Tour Guide and start walking! If you work in one of these areas, it is easy to find a home that would allow you to walk to work. Bike Albuquerque was named one of the “The 21 Best Cities for Cycling” in America by Bicycling Magazine in 2006. The city buses have bike racks so if biking is too far, you can combine the two and still reduce your impact. Albuquerque has some great biking trails for the outdoor enthisuast. Check out the Bike Map of Albuquerque. ![]()
Bus ABQ Ride operates 148 buses and can even connect you to Rio Rancho via bus #151. Check out the schedule online and plan your route. If you are downtown, you can hop on the D-ride for free! The buses loop around downtown and are hard to miss with a bright graphic wrap. Some of the spots you can hit are: Convention Center, City Hall, and the Main Library. Check it out here. If you are a UNM student, you can ride the buses for free. Just make sure you get your Lobo Ride Pass sticker first! Lobo Ride Pass information.
Rail Runner Running from Bernalillo to Belen with 7 stations. You can easily connect to a bus or, if going downtown, to the free D-ride!
The city also allows free parking downtown at any meter if you own a hybrid car and obtain a permit. Let’s not forgot the old carpool! I remember my mother carpooling in the 70′s. Several sites have updated this with online computer matching, including carpoolconnect.com and erideshare.com. Streetcars None yet, but they are in development with plans for Fall of 2009. Ashley; looks like Albuquerque has some great green options available for commuting and traveling through the city. Nicely presented information
Ashley, I hope the citizens of Albuquerque take advantage of the information you have provided them.
Ashley – this was a great article about eco-friendly Albuquerque transportation, creative ways to get home and back
- I had never thought about it like that – and we have many of those same things in Clearwater – Cyndee
Ashley,
I am surprised at all the eco-friendly options for getting around Albuquerque. Our town is small enough that we don’t have any of these except walking, biking, and carpooling.
Thesa – ABQ has made great strides on the green front.
Mana – Even using alternative transportation once a week makes a difference.
Cyndee – With a little creative thinking you can really can get around town without a car.
Rita – We just got the rail runner in the last year. I haven’t been on it yet but the kids all have. It’s nice to have some alternatives.
Why didn’t I think of “walk” as being the first thing? Of course, it is a natural! When I think of eco friendly transportation I always think of busses, but you got it all Ashley. A great blog action day post….thanks for participating! More than 20,000 bloggers did!
Pretty Cool all the options you have vs. driving yourself through ABQ! Walking is always an option…but how fun to know there are some fun options available too! ~Susie
Joanne – It is easy to overlook the most basic eco-friendly form of transportation.
Susie – I haven’t been on the Rail Runner yet but I think that would be a fun way. You can really combine these up for a good overall plan.
Ashley – Blog Action Day provided a lot of different ideas and solutions. Walking is the most simple form of transportation and certainly environmentally friendly – not to mention what it can do for one’s health.
~Paula
Paula – I think walking is the most overlooked solution. I need to get out there and see more of the other blog action day posts still.
I didn’t realize Albuquerque was such a bike friendly town! I think that is fantastic. You are right-cutting out the car even one day a week would make a huge difference to our environment!
Ginger – Between the bike trails and the bus racks we are a very friendly bike town!
